Making our bricks
Step by step on how our bricks are made
01
We remove the clay from the ground
The clay is mined on the surface on plot at Mahate with abundant clay deposits. The clay is harvested by hand used simple hand tools. It is transported on foot in buckets to the workshop.
02
We mix the clay
The clay is mixed with water and a little bit of sand and mixed bare foot by our workers until it forms a smooth and uniform product.
03
We shape and press the bricks
The workers form uniform balls of clay. The inside of the 2 cavities in the machine are made non-stick by applying a mixture of oil and diesel. 2 clay balls are put into the manual clay brick molding machine. The lever of the machine helps to put pressure on the clay to guarantee that it comes out smooth and well compacted.
04
We let the bricks dry
In the shade, protected from sun, rain and wind, the bricks have to dry slowly for 2 to 4 weeks, depending of the atmospheric conditions.
05
We burn the bricks
We operate two intermittent kilns, each with a capacity of about 5,000 bricks. We use locally sourced old cashew trees for burning the bricks, promoting carbon neutrality, as these trees would release the same amount of carbon if not burned. The carbon footprint is minimized, except for the use of diesel in trucks transporting the wood. Choosing clay bricks over cement blocks is an effective strategy to reduce our carbon footprint.
06
The bricks are then left to cool
The bricks are cooling down in the kilns for 2 days and are then ready to be used as very versatile building material.
07
Let’s pick them up
Each brick is 21 cm long, 10 cm wide and 7 cm high and weighs about 3 kg. You can order and pick them up at our installations in the neighborhood Mahate. We can also provide transport if you need.
